Test + Tag

What is Testing + Tagging?
Test and tag is a process of inspecting and testing portable electrical appliances, ensuring electrical safety in the workplace. It involves a visual inspection for damage, followed by electrical testing to verify the appliance's safety. A tag is then attached to the appliance indicating the test date, who performed it, and when the next test is due. This process helps minimize electrical hazards and potential liability for employers.

Where + When Do I Need Testing + Tagging?
In Victoria, any electrical equipment that can be plugged into a power outlet, including portable appliances and machinery with flexible cords, needs to be tested and tagged. All workplaces, regardless of their industry, are required to have their electrical equipment tested and tagged. This includes items like computers, printers, power tools, extension leads, and kitchen appliances.
Construction, Demolition and Mining - These environments have more stringent requirements due to the higher risk of damage and exposure to the elements. Testing and Tagging should be done every 3 months.
Factories, Workshops, and Production Areas - Testing and Tagging of all electrical equipment should be done every 6 months.
Environments with flexing cords or a high risk of damage - every 12 months
Low-risk areas (e.g. offices, server rooms) - every 5 years
Legislation Overview
In Victoria, Australia, the testing and tagging of electrical equipment is governed by the Electricity Safety (Installation Testing) Regulations 2009. These regulations mandate that all portable electrical equipment and leads be tested and tagged by a qualified person at least every 12 months. The specific intervals for testing and tagging can vary based on the environment the equipment is used in, with stricter requirements for harsher environments like construction sites.
Key aspects of the regulations include:
Frequency - While a general 12-month interval is mandated, the frequency can be shorter depending on the environment. For example:
High-risk environments - (construction, demolition, mining): Every 3 months.
Factories, workshops, production areas - Every 6 months.
Areas with flexing cords or high damage risk - Every 12 months.
Low-risk areas - (offices, server rooms): Every 5 years.
Qualified Technician - Testing and tagging must be performed by a qualified person who has the necessary knowledge and skills, through training, qualification, or experience. This could be a licensed electrician or someone who has completed a nationally accredited test and tag course. Adessa Electrical has both.
Documentation - Records of all testing and tagging, including the next test due date, should be maintained.
Visual Inspection - A visual inspection of equipment and leads is always be conducted before use to check for damage.
New Equipment - Newly purchased equipment should be visually inspected and tagged as "New to Service" if deemed safe, and then tested according to the relevant frequency guide.
Victoria's regulations aim to ensure electrical safety in the workplace by requiring regular testing and tagging of electrical equipment. The specific requirements can vary based on the environment, so it's crucial to understand the relevant intervals and guidelines for your specific situation.
