How to Choose the Perfect Bathroom Lighting for Your Space

Updated: Dec 12, 2023

The bathroom is one of the most utilised rooms of the home, but often has the smallest windows and the least amount of light. This is why your bathroom lighting plan is essential for creating a beautiful and functional space.

General Lighting

General lighting provides enough light to compensate for lack of natural light and is good for everyday use of the space. The best general lighting solution is a series of LED Downlights in the centre of the room. The quantity and locations of these are dictated by the size and layout of your bathroom, but generally 1 or 2 Downlights is sufficient. If you have an enclosed shower it can be a great idea to add an extra light in this area for better visibility.

Older homes may still have a single batten holder and light globe in the centre of the room. Consider upgrading to LED Downlights for a lighter and brighter room.

Task Lighting

Task lighting is targeted, focused and directional lighting at the vanity, perfect for tasks like applying makeup or shaving. A backlit mirror is a fantastic option for this as they provide an even light source around the entirety of the mirror and can often be set to different colours and brightnesses. Other great options include wall lights, pendant lights, LED strip lights, linear lights, or could be as simple as 1 or 2 Downlights directly above the vanity.

Accent Lighting

Accent lighting complements the general and task lighting, and is a great way to add decorative elements to your bathroom, whilst still providing some extra light. One of the most popular accent lighting options is LED strip lights. These can be located in shower and bath niches, above and/or below shaving cabinets, along the cabinetry kickboard, around floating ceilings, in open shelves, and inside cupboards. Pendant lights and wall sconces are also a great way to add to the style and esthetic of the bathroom.

Planning Your Dream Bathroom Lighting

As we all know, electricity and water don’t mix well, so it is essential to consult with an electrician to discuss your bathroom lighting needs. At Adessa Electrical we can work with you to create a lighting plan that is not only safe and legal, but functional and beautiful.
